Mentorship has played an integral role in my university journey. Whether it be peers, seniors, lecturers or internship supervisors, I gained valuable tips and meaningful advice which was useful in navigating university life. This positive experience spurred me to get involved in the mentorship team within Access! Especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, academic guidance, career advice and exposure to diverse career paths helps to broaden their perspective in what they can pursue in then future! Despite having to adapt to mixed modes of mentorship between online and physical sessions, it has been a pleasure go work with mentees and volunteers, especially when the programmes are well received ❤️

Volunteering at Access has been a meaningful experience for me so far. While I’ve just joined, I got to experience what it is like to plan the career programmes I used to experience in secondary school. The feeling of working together is really rewarding when I get to work with other like-minded people who also want to make these programmes fun and meaningful to students!

Volunteering with Access was a breath of fresh air after doing comms work for brands and corporations since graduation. Knowing that more had to hear about the work Access was doing for the future of our youths made my stint here that much more purposeful and meaningful. It brings me much joy knowing that our little team has managed to achieve more awareness and recognition all across Singapore in just a few years!

To pick an educational course or career path, which can affect you for the next few years, is not easy. Personally, I am grateful to have had guidance from teachers to navigate this choice. Here at Access, we act as those teachers, helping students gain self-awareness, which they can then leverage to define success and decide their future. It has been very heartwarming to see the growth in the students I've worked with, and this pushes me to continue volunteering with Access.

Many of us have experienced the feeling of being lost in life, having no idea where to go with our careers or our education. I was lucky enough to have networks and mentors who helped me find my interests and passions. Therefore, I wanted to be part of an organization that aims to help disadvantaged youths discover their areas of interest, gain industry exposure, and develop practical skills in the workplace! Volunteering at Access has been extremely enjoyable and meaningful, especially being able to help spread the word about such opportunities and increasing social mobility in Singapore. I’m extremely grateful to be part of Access’ growth, and more importantly, igniting the spark in youths who need it.

Joining Access struck a chord with my core values, driving me to volunteer and contribute to a cause that is close to my heart. The journey through the 10-month Google x Northbrooks programme was particularly poignant, allowing me to closely accompany students on their learning journey, feeling immense pride and joy in their growth and achievements. Witnessing their transformation first-hand was not only profoundly rewarding but also fostered a deep sense of connection and purpose in me. My time at Access has been more than just volunteering; it’s been a journey of shared growth, learning, and heartfelt engagement, enhancing my skills and enriching my spirit.

I have always resonated with the mission of Access, in helping students realise their potential and to make more informed education and decisions based on their interest, abilities and passion. Access’s programmes have allowed me to interact with and learn from students from an education background similar to mine. I have seen changes in their attitudes towards their school and most importantly, their curiosity to learn more. I am proud to be part of the team of facilitators that have helped inspire students discover their best selves.

Access has been a welcoming and safe space to be a facilitator. The staff are very caring and also diligent in supporting facilitators. The structure and training of volunteering have been effective and straightforward. I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions with the beneficiaries and stakeholders throughout the programmes and even learnt many valuable lessons and insightful exposures myself. If you are considering joining ACCESS do give it a chance!

I had initially approached Access as an opportunity to utilise my time well during my summer break and also to gain some extra pocket money. However, my time with the Access community has been nothing short of enriching. As a facilitator, I had the opportunity to widen my horizons about the challenges faced by fellow students and also how I can better equip myself to serve my community and impact the lives of the students I work with in whatever way possible. Public speaking skills, teamwork, and crisis management skills are just some of the most valuable learning points I have picked up, which I believe will serve to prepare me for the working world in the near future.

My volunteering journey with ACCESS has been a profoundly humbling and fulfilling experience. As my passion lies in working with youths from disadvantaged backgrounds, ACCESS provided me with ample opportunities to pursue my passion, simultaneously honing my leadership and facilitation skills. As an arts student who is attracted to unconventional careers, I am honoured to have been able to share my experiences and knowledge with my mentees on how I navigated through my challenges, thereby empowering them to boldly chase their dreams. I'm a proud ACCESS volunteer, and I hope that you'll be one soon too!

"Increasing social mobility" seems like a nebulous goal, hard to define or achieve. Access provided me with the opportunity to have a very real, hands-on approach to increasing social mobility as a facilitator that was thoroughly enriching. From having simple chats with the students, helping them make the best of their mentors' decades of experience in their field, and watching them develop crucial soft skills, I could see the impact of my effort as a facilitator. The opportunity to help improve social mobility is not one that comes frequently, so I'm truly grateful!
